“De Etende Mens” – an exhibition about design and food

As mentioned before, we are taking all necessary measures to get a better insight into the sectors of food, visual culture and social innovation. Therefore, the members of the Bridge Research Agency went to visit the exhibition “De Etende Mens”, or better said “The Eating Human” in the Design Huis, Eindhoven, today.

This exhibition shows work that is designed to make people think about the link between design, food and where it comes from. These pieces were put together by the famous, Dutch food-designer Marije Vogelzang and includes several pieces from European artists. Here, people can discover more about the production of food and its design and learn that all food, even bagels and macaroni, is well thought out by designers.

The exhibition displayed several pieces that highlighted problems concerning food such as obesity, switching from intensive farming to cultivated food, wasting food that doesn’t look ‘appetizing’ according to Western standards and using food as a social tool.

Even though all pieces were quite interesting, there is one piece I would like to highlight that really reflected a serious food problem within our world. In one room, three pictures were displayed of four families; one in Germany, one in Africa, one in the United States and one in Mexico. On these pictures, the amount of food that they consume weekly was displayed. When looking at this pictures I honestly have to say that I was astonished. The amounts of food that an average family consumes in the United States and Germany was around 10 times as much as in relation to the other two families. This really reflected the high consuming levels of food in the Western society in relation to the food scarcity in third world countries. Shocking!

This exhibition in Eindhoven was originally planned to be displayed from June till September 2012, but due to the huge succes they prolonged it untill the 6th of January 2013. So if you are interested in food, design or the combination, we strongly recommend you should go!
